The idea of creating the Salon International de l'Artisanat de Ouagadougou (SIAO) came from the political authorities of Burkina Faso, who realized that handicrafts, like agriculture, made a major contribution to the growth of African economies.
Starting with an exhibition and sale of handicrafts in 1984, the Salon was established in 1990 with the participation of some thirty African countries.
To better manage the event, the national authorities have set up an administrative structure.
The SIAO is a highly sought-after event for African countries. Held every two (2) years, it is an ideal setting for African craftsmen to market their products on national and international markets.
In addition to organizing the Biennale of African Crafts, the SIAO encourages and facilitates the holding of artistic, cultural and commercial events on its site.
It also boasts a network of skills and expertise in auditing, consulting and training in the craft sector.
SIAO also provides a range of services, including pavilion and exhibition equipment rental.
